How to Study Physics: Mastering the Basics and Beyond

Studying Physics is difficult, and remember, you’re not the only one who thinks this! Physics, with its intricate concepts and challenging problems, well, it can be daunting. But fear not! It’s not impossible, and plenty of people have gone through getting a degree in Physics, including me! And in doing so, I’ve learned some tips and tricks on how to prepare for Physics exams in both secondary school and university, which I’ve shared below. Happy studying!

Know Your Definitions

Physics is a language of its own, and like any language, mastering the vocabulary is crucial. Definitions aren't just formalities; they are the building blocks of understanding complex concepts. And with regards to exams, a definition is usually the first question you’ll come across, so it’s easy marks once you know them! When I was doing my undergraduate, I constantly had flashcards with all the definitions, and I’d highly recommend for you to do the same! Using these you can regularly test yourself to see how well you know these terms. This method not only reinforces your memory but also makes it easier to understand and apply concepts.

Practice, Practice Practice!

The age-old saying, "practice makes perfect," holds particularly true in physics. Tutorials and assignments often present challenging questions for a reason: to push your understanding to its limits. My advice? Try as many of these problems as possible. It's not just about being able to solve them; it's about understanding every step of the process. And don't limit yourself to coursework problems! The internet is a treasure trove of resources, including extra questions and detailed explanations. I always found YouTube tutorials particularly useful!

Exam Question Time!

Past exam papers are a window into the examiners' minds. Pay attention to the format and style of questions. Notice any recurring themes? Which sections carry the most weight? Understanding the exam's structure will allow you to strategize effectively. It's also crucial to learn how to structure your answers. And remember not to be scared when it comes to the exam. Think of it as a way to show off to the examiner what you know and what you are capable of. The key is really to believe in yourself!

Understanding vs Rote Learning

Physics isn't just about equations and calculations; it's about understanding the 'why' and 'how'. Take the example of special relativity. It's relatively easy (pun intended!) to memorize equations, but do you know where they come from? How are they derived? Aim to develop a deep understanding of topics for the exam. This approach not only helps in exams but also in applying physics principles to real-world problems and will give you a huge advantage beyond your degree.

Collaborate and Learn

Remember, studying physics is not a lonely journey. If you find yourself stuck on a concept or problem, don't hesitate to reach out to peers or mentors. I always found group study sessions to be particularly effective! You'll be surprised how explaining a concept to someone else can deepen your own understanding. And always remember, it is not a competition; it's about personal growth and understanding.

In short, studying physics is a challenging but in my opinion, an immensely rewarding journey. It requires a blend of memorization, practice, strategic examination skills, deep understanding, and collaboration. By following my advice, hopefully you'll be well on your way to not just learning but mastering the language of physics. Good luck, and feel free to email me to let me know how it goes!
